The Grey Crowned Crane (Balearica regulorum gibbericeps) is the national bird of Uganda and a proud symbol of the country’s natural beauty and heritage. Graceful, elegant, and easily recognizable by its golden crown of feathers, the crane is featured prominently on Uganda’s national flag and coat of arms.
Native to the wetlands and grasslands of eastern and southern Africa, the Grey Crowned Crane is known for its elaborate courtship dances, impressive vocal calls, and majestic appearance. It represents peace, prosperity, and the ecological richness of Uganda.
Sadly, despite its cultural importance, the species is classified as Endangered due to habitat loss and human encroachment. Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect this iconic bird and ensure that future generations can continue to admire it in the wild.
